French Photographer Anne-Laure Etienne started photography when she was in her teens, and in her less than 30 years of life, she has already become a remarkable photographer / Video Artist. 

 

She tries to deepen her relationship with bodies and their envelopes of skin or fabric in her latest project called “Tissue and Bones”. 

 

 

This time Gallery Photographs would like to present her 22 works from the mentioned photographic series for the first time in Japan.

彼女は最新プロジェクト「Tissue and Bones」の制作において、身体とそれを包む皮膚や布との関係を深めていこうと試みています。

-Firstly, will you tell us how you started photography?

 

 

 

I started photography when I was a teenager. I have always liked to create, draw, cut or collage. When I discovered it, I had a fairly direct relationship with this medium, like love at first sight.

 

I immediately liked the tool, the instantaneous aspect, but above all the autonomy it gave me. In the beginning, I photographed my friends and relatives a lot. It was a way of freezing my generation, I wanted to keep a memory of what I was going through.

 

My practice then became more and more personal, and I started self-portraiture. I understood at that moment that photography was a real means of expression beyond being a simple hobby.

 

 

 

 

 

-まず、写真を始めたきっかけを教えていただけますか？

 

 

 

私が写真を始めたのは、10代の頃でした。私は昔から、絵を描いたり、紙を切ったり、コラージュしたりと、創作することが大好きでした。写真に出会ったとき、私はまるで一目ぼれのように、このメディアと非常にダイレクトな関係を持ちました。

 

すぐにこのツールの瞬間的な側面、そして何よりも自主性を与えてくれるところが気に入りました。最初の頃は、友人や親戚の写真をよく撮っていました。それは、私の世代を留めておく一つの方法であり、私が経験してきたことを記憶しておきたかったのです。

 

その後、私の活動はますます個人的なものになり、自画像の撮影を開始しました。その時、写真が単なる趣味を超えた真の表現手段であることを理解したのです。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

-Where is the main base of your current activity as a photographer?

 

 

 

I work a lot in the music industry. I imagine the visual universe of the musicians: album covers, promotional photos, video clips. I make the sets and I also like to take care of the styling.

 

Also, I have been working for almost ten years on the development of my personal portfolio.

 

 

 

 

 

-写真家としての現在の活動拠点はどちらですか？

 

 

 

私は音楽業界で多くの仕事をしています。アルバムカバー、プロモーション写真、ビデオクリップなど、ミュージシャンのビジュアル世界を想像しています。

-Please tell us about the selection of your photographic works for this exhibition.

 

 

 

I started the “Tissue and Bones” series in 2016. The human being is the main subject of these photographs.

 

I wanted to make characters evolve in natural settings, let the bodies express themselves in open spaces. These images are the representation of our states of being.

 

I try to deepen my relationship with bodies and their envelopes of skin or fabric. The idea is to offer photos in three dimensions: the real, the symbolic and the imaginary.

 

 

 

 

 

-今回の展覧会でご紹介いただく作品について教えてください。

 

 

 

2016年から「Tissue and Bones」シリーズを始めました。この写真シリーズでは、人間が主な被写体です。私は、キャラクターを自然な環境で進化させ、オープンスペースで身体を表現したかったのです。

 

これらのイメージは、私たちの存在の状態を表現したものです。私は作品制作を通して、身体とその皮膚や布の包容力との関係を深めようとしています。現実、象徴、想像の3つの次元で写真を提供することが理想です。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

-The beautiful vivid colors seen in your work gives us surreal and magical impressions. What makes you have this preference of colors or tones you use?

 

 

 

Color work is very important in my work: it brings a fantastic, dreamlike, surreal side to the images.

 

I want to encourage people to travel and immerse themselves in their imagination. I also really like the work of the material and the fabric.

 

 

 

 

 

-あなたの作品に見られる美しく鮮やかな色彩から、非現実的で不思議な印象を受けますが、このような色やトーンへのこだわりには何か理由がありますか？

 

 

 

カラーワークは私の作品において非常に重要です。イメージに幻想的、夢幻的、超現実的な側面をもたらします。私は、人々に旅行や想像の世界に浸ることを奨励したいのです。

-Body movements and poses are very unique impressive in your work, how do you usually come up with these ideas?

 

 

 

I have always been attracted by the strange and the fantastic: in my reading, in cinema or photography.

 

I like to create timeless scenes, staging the subjects in an unusual way: the universe settles with disconcerted bodies in unexpected positions.

 

 

 

 

 

-作品中の体の動きやポーズが大変ユニークで印象的ですが、こういったアイデアはどのように思いつくのでしょう？

 

 

 

私は、読書、映画、写真などにおいて、常に奇妙で幻想的なものに魅了されてきました。被写体を通常とは異なる方法で演出し、時間を超越したシーンを作り出すことが好きです。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

　　

 

 

 

　　

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

-What part of the creative process do you enjoy most, and what do you find most challenging?

 

 

 

I like to think that all the steps are important: the shooting for the escape and the landscapes. I also enjoy retouching to bring images to life, like a second reading.

 

 

 

 

 

-制作過程において、最も楽しんでいらっしゃることは何ですか？また、最も難しいと感じることは何でしょうか？

 

 

 

エスケープや風景の撮影など、すべての工程が重要だと考えています。また、2度目の読書みたいに、画像にもう一度命を吹き込むレタッチ作業も楽しんでいます。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

-Are you currently working as an artist? Or do you also do editorial, advertisement and other commercial works?

 

 

 

I am a service provider, I work mainly in the music industry. At the same time, I work on my personal portfolio.

 

 

 

 

 

-主にアーティストとして活動されていますか？ もしくは雑誌や広告などのお仕事もされていますか？

-Do you have any particular preference regarding cameras (equipment) you use?

 

 

 

For digital photography, I have always used Nikon. For film photography, I have a medium format Pentax and a small Minolta (point and shoot)

デジタル写真では、ずっとニコンを使ってきました。フィルム写真では、ミディアムフォーマット（中判）のペンタックスと小型のミノルタ（ポイント・アンド・シュート）を持っています。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

-Is there any artist or photographer that has inspired your works?

 

 

 

My biggest inspiration is Francesca Woodman, her work is beautiful and fascinating.

 

 

 

 

 

-作品制作に影響を受けたアーティストや写真家はいらっしゃいますか？

-Are you interested in Japan?　Any Japanese Artist you know?

 

 

 

I have always dreamed of visiting Japan, this country intrigues me a lot. I have always liked traditional Japanese outfits and current clothing trends as well.

 

Tokyo is the capital of fashion: in my imagination, it’s a colorful city, people like to dress in various styles with many materials.

 

And then there are the animated films: Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke), Hiroyuki Morita (Kingdom of the Cats).

 

I am also fascinated by the photographic universe of Kimiko Yoshida. Japanese culture generally inspires me in the creation of my photographs.

 

 

 

 

 

-日本に興味はありますか？好きな日本人アーティストはいますか？

 

 

 

私はいつも日本に行くことを夢見ていました。日本にはとても興味があります。

 

日本の伝統的な服装はもちろん、現在のトレンドも好きです。東京はファッションの中心地です。私の想像では、東京はカラフルな街で、人々は多くの素材を使ったさまざまなスタイルの服を好んで着ています。

– Please tell us if you have something you want to do in the future or any project you already have in mind.

 

 

 

I would like to progress in film photography, I fell in love with medium format.

 

I would also like to export my work abroad. I would also enjoy working in the fashion world, meeting designers, and working with professional models.

 

 

 

 

 

-将来的に何かやりたいことや、今すでに考えていることがあれば教えてください。

 

 

 

ミディアムフォーマット（中判）に夢中になったフィルム写真を進歩させたいと思います。また、自分の作品を海外に輸出することも考えています。

French Photographer Anne-Laure Etienne has managed to build up a mosaic of life that places her in a category of exceptional photographers / video artists in less than 30 years of existence.

 

Her composite work, immediately recognizable although in perpetual hybridization, is a masterful representation of her time.

 

Naturally, she captures atmospheres that transcend time and fashion. She figures textures, materials, tints and lights with the subtlety induced by her permanent questioning of the link

 

between content and form. In her relationship with nature and the human body, gender is not important, in every sense of the word.

 

Language can quickly reach its limits when it comes to describing his work.
