Elise Corten
“Warmer Than The Sun”
Belgium based photographer Elise Corten works on film, and her photography primarily explores themes of intimacy, love and relationships. In her ongoing series, “Warmer than the Sun”,
Elise captures the relationship between her and her mother. A visual conversation of portraits, still lives, and landscapes discusses the seemingly mundane yet, strikingly intimate relationship
they share. In documenting her mother’s daily rituals, Elise creates a narrative that explores who her mother is, both as a mother and as a person. This narrative redefines maternal intimacy
and illuminates her mother’s identity.
Here we introduce you 18 images from this documentary project that is still in progress.

エリーゼは自身の母親との関係性を捉えています。肖像画、静物画、または風景画のような視覚的な対話が、二人が共有する一見平凡でありながらも驚くほど親密な関係を表現しています。母親の日常を記録することで、
エリーゼは、母親が 母として また一人の人間として、どのような人物であるのかということを探究した 物語を創造しているのです。エリーゼの作り出すこの物語が、母性を再定義し、母親のアイデンティティを写し出して
います。
この度は、未だ現在進行中のこのドキュメンタリーシリーズより、18作品をご紹介いたします。
INTERVIEW
-Firstly, will you tell us how you started photography?
I was 20 when I first picked up a camera, a little point and shoot. Quite quickly I discovered I had a real love for photography. Since then I have been photographing non stop and I am absolutely
fascinated by the medium.
—まず始めに、写真を始めたきっかけを教えていただけますか？
初めてカメラを手に取ったのは、二十歳の時で、すぐに写真が大好きになりました。それ以来、休まず写真を撮り続け、完全に夢中になっています。
-Where is the main base of your current activity as a photographer?
I am based in Belgium.
—現在の写真家としての活動の拠点はどこですか？
私はベルギーを拠点に活動しています。
-Your photographic series “Warmer than the sun” is the documentary works of your own mother, but what makes you decide to portray and expose your mother, the most intimate parson to you as
a model?
It wasn’t really a decision, I naturally gravitated to photographing her because we are very close. For a while I had been taking pictures of her before I realized I had material for a project. I suppose
in a way it does expose my mother to me (and others), in a sense that I understand better the dynamic between us and how it translates visually. I hope to keep photographing her and myself to
study changes, physical and emotional.
—シリーズ「Warmer than the sun（太陽より暖かく）」はご自身のお母様をモデルに撮影されていますが、最も親密な存在であると言える「母」を記録し作品にしようと決断された理由はなんでしょうか？
決断と言うほどのことではありませんでしたが、母とはとても近しい関係なので、自然と彼女を撮影したいと考えるようになりました。母性をプロジェクトのテーマにしようと思いつく以前から、母の写真をしばらく撮り続
けていました。ある意味これは、母を私自身（や他人）にさらけ出すということですが、私たち親子の間にあるエネルギーのようなものを視覚的に表現し、より理解しやすくすることでもあると思いました。
-And what messages do you want to convey to viewers through these works?
Hopefully people can relate to certain aspects of my work. It’s the universal aspect of photography that I rely on to tell a story.
—また、この作品シリーズによって鑑賞者に伝えたいことは何ですか？
人々が私の作品の一側面に共感してくださると良いなと思っています。それは、私が作品を通して物語を伝える際に依存している写真の普遍的な側面でもあります。
-In many of your works, we can feel some kind of nostalgia and intimacy, but how would you describe your own photography style?
Intimacy is very important in my work. Intimacy as in closeness and connection with my subject. I am interested in how certain relationships form and change over time and I guess the nostalgic
part of my personality wants to capture these feelings to hold onto memories.
—あなたの多くの作品からは、懐かしさや親密さが感じられるのですが、ご自身ではご自分の写真スタイルはどのようなものだとお考えですか？

– What is the source of inspiration for your photography?
It can be anything. I read a lot, watch movies, and usually I’m inspired by certain questions that I don’t have an answer to. Taking my dogs for long walks in the woods is something that gives me a
lot of peace and new energy to create. It’s simple things.
—あなたの作品制作におけるインスピレーションは何ですか？
あらゆるものです。私はよく本を読んだり映画を観たりして、大抵答えの見えない疑問に影響されています。犬を森に散歩へ連れて行くことも、私を平穏な気持ちにして、新しい創作意欲をくれます。シンプルなことなのです。
-What it the most important thing to you in producing works?
For me to connect to the person or matter I’m photographing. To listen to my intuition and learn something in the process.
—作品制作において最も重要なことは何ですか？
被写体と繋がることです。そして本能に従って、その過程から何かを学ぶことです。
-Do you have any particular preference regarding cameras (equipment) you use?
For a while I have been shooting with different medium format camera’s and always on film. I prefer to work with natural light.
—使用しているカメラ機材に何かこだわりはありますか？
しばらく色々な種類のカメラを使ってきましたが、常にフィルムは用いていました。自然光で撮影することが好きです。
-Are you currently working as an artist? Or do you also do editorial, advertisement and other commercial works?
I am finishing my master’s in fine art photography, working on personal projects and taking portrait commissions on the side.
—現在アーティストとして活動されていますか？もしくは広告や雑誌などの仕事もされていますか？
私は現在、ファインアート写真の修士課程で学びながら、自分のプロジェクトを制作したり、ポートレート写真の依頼を受け付けています。
-Is there any artist or photographer that has inspired your works?
I have learned a lot from studying other artists work, not necessarily photographers. The Italian Renaissance is a huge inspiration. Form, shape and light are details I can dwell on for a long time.
Though there are a lot of photographic references that I often look at, like Elinor Carucci, Sally Mann, Larry Sultan, …
—影響を受けたアーティストや写真家はいますか？
写真家に限らず、他のアーティストの作品からは多くのことを学びました。イタリア・ルネッサンスは大きな刺激です。構成、形、光などについて、じっくりと考えさせられました。
他にも、エラナー・カルッチやサリー・マン、ラリー・スルタンなど参考にしている作品は多々あります。
-Are you interested in Japan? Any Japanese Artist you know?
I would love to see Japan, it would be amazing to explore the country and try the food. So far my knowledge of Japanese culture is limited to cinema, anime and some (photo)books.
Recently I saw the movie ‘Nobody knows’ again, it still moves me so much. The work of Takashi Homma and Rinko Kawauchi I find really wonderful.
—日本に興味はありますか？知っている日本人アーティストはいますか？
日本には行ってみたいと思っています。日本を巡って、日本食にも挑戦できたら素晴らしいですね。今のところ、私の日本文化に関する知識は、映画やアニメ、本（写真集など）に限られています。
最近また、映画「誰も知らない」を観ましたが、やはり感動しました。ホンマタカシさんと川内倫子さんの作品はとても素晴らしいと思います。
– Please tell us if you have something you want to do in the future or any project you already have in mind.
I am always photographing the people I am close to. Usually I photograph what I find interesting or want to know more about. Recently I started to think about maternal feelings so that is part of
my master thesis research and will somehow be integrated in the work.
—将来的にやってみたいことや、すでに考えているプロジェクト等があれば是非教えてください。
私は常に親しい人たちを被写体としています。大抵は興味深いと感じるものやもっと知りたいと感じるものを撮影します。最近、母性について考え始め、それを修士論文の研究の一部としており、作品としてもまとめられ

Elise Corten (b.1994) is a photographer based in Belgium. She received a BA from Luca School of Arts in Brussels in 2018 and is currently working on multiple photographic series, whilst finishing
her Masters degree. Her work primarily explores themes of intimacy and love through personal relationships. Elise works on film and aims to illuminate human relationships and the people within
them. Her work has been shown in various international publications and exhibitions.
