Jill Beth Hannes
LA based Photographer Jill Beth Hannes loves shooting with films and her works are often described as cinematic or dream-like. Here we introduce her works, mainly from her latest photographic
series “The Strange Women” that reflects her own personal experience in her life.
“The Strange Women” is an ongoing personal project started in 2010 while becoming sober. I struggled greatly with the concept of identity and my own identity. Fear of the unknown world that I
was about to enter into was something that I wanted to capture.
The feeling of isolation, confusion, anger, and longing to belong. Each image is haunting and cinematic. Life on pause for just a moment before beginning a new. My intention for the viewer is to
relate to the feeling of fear and vulnerability I felt and still do as I journey through self discovery.

「 “The Strange Women”

– Firstly, will you tell us how you started photography?
I started taking photographs when I was in elementary school. I went to a small school in Hawaii and one year the entire school worked together on creating a book. Some students were given
writing assignments and some were given cameras. I was given a small disposable camera and I haven’t stopped photographing since. I took photographs hroughout high school of all my friends
with an old 35mm Minolta my grandfather gave me. I attended the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and graduated in 2010.
– Where is the main base of your current activity as a photographer?
Right now I’m located in Los Angeles.
– What is the source of inspiration for your photography?
Everything becomes a source of inspiration. Walking down the street and observing people. Watching people sitting in traffic.
Old movies. I once saw a woman on the subway in Paris and she was an older woman. She was wearing this yellow outfit from the 1970s. Her hair was the same color yellow as her clothes.
She barley stood out against the tan subway seats and she looked a bit sad. I’ve been thinking about her for awhile and will soon create an image based on her.
– Is there any specific meaning put into this title “The Strange Women”? Please tell us how you started this series?
I started this series when I stopped drinking alcohol. I was learning about myself a lot and finding new things about myself. I felt like a stranger and every day I could be someone new. That’s where
Strange Women came from.
–「The Strange Women」
– Does “Strange Women” series contains self-portraits? Also, do you have personal acquaintance with all the woman appears in this series?
Half are self-portraits and half are friends. Strange Women was only self-portraits in the very beginning but I began to notice other people around me with similar personality traits and qualities
that I connected with and started shooting others from then on.
–「Strange Women」
– Including the above series, the subjects of your works are mostly women, but is there any reason why you are committed to taking women?
With each image I’m telling my story. I identify as a women and so in telling my story I use women.
I am open to shooting male-identified people but I haven’t had a concept yet that I’m ready to start.
– It seems that you are a mother of a baby. In some of your works, there is a figure of woman holding a baby…is that yourself and your own child?
Incidentally, do you reflect your life-events or experiences in creating your works?
Yes, that’s my baby! I had a baby a little over a year ago. My life is a direct reflection of my work. I look at it as if I’m photographing my biography as it’s happening.
– What it the most important thing to you in producing works?
I want to be authentic. I want to be true to myself and my story. That’s all we have… our stories and hopefully from artists, people, everyone sharing our stories we can learn and grow.
– Do you have any particular preference regarding cameras (equipments) you use?
Not really. I love shooting film. Mainly because that is what I’m most comfortable shooting. It’s how I learned photography.
Also, even though most of my images are planned and really thought-out I love being in the moment while photographing and film allows me to do that.
– Is there any artist or photographer that has inspired your works?
Mary Ellen Mark is a huge inspiration. When I first saw her images it sparked this fire in me that hasn’t ever disappeared.
Jeff Wall is another huge source of inspiration. Sally Mann, Cindy Sherman, Nan Goldin, Susan Sontag’s writing, Stanley Kubrick and the film “A Woman Under the Influence.”
Mary Ellen Mark
– Are you interested in Japan? Any Japanese Artist you know?
Absolutely! My sister-in-law and her husband are currently living in Okinawa and I’m really excited to visit them soon. I really love Yasumasa Morimura and Hiroshi Sugimoto’s portraits.
– Where would you like to see your photography in the future? Any new project you have in mind now?
I think I will always be photographing Strange Women. I’m starting a new series now titled “Nosebleed” that will be discussing anxiety.
Hopefully I will be shooting some short films to go along with Strange Women soon.
Strange Women
