London based Photographer Laura Pannack is well-known for her portraiture and social documentary works. Driven by research-led, self-initiated projects, Pannack seeks to fully understand the lives of those she captures on film in order to portray them as truthfully as possible.  Perceiving “time, trust and understanding” to be the key elements to achieving this, many of her projects develop over several years, helping her achieve a genuine connection between herself and her sitter and allowing her to capture the intimacy, shared ideas and shared experiences of this relationship.　Here we are pleased to present her 24 works as a selection of the last years. -Firstly, will you tell us how you started photography?

 

 

 

I studied painting at St Martins but my father is a photographer so the darkroom is a familiar and nostalgic place. 

 

I took photography on a foundation at LCC and enjoyed the immediacy of the process. I fell in love with everything about it.

私はロンドン芸術大学のセントマーチンズで絵画を学びましたが、父が写真家なので、暗室は常に身近で懐かしい場所なんです。

-It seems there are many photographs of children or teenagers in your works, how do you choose your subjects? And is there any reason to focus on young people?

 

 

 

Yes I find adolescence the most fascinating time of transition and I can relate to teenagers and children. I admire their free will and sense of imagination.

-The beautiful scenes of your works give us somehow sincere and tranquil impression. Is there anything you intend to do in particular when shooting to create this type of expression?

 

 

 

Connect and engage. I hope then this is passed through to the viewer. If I can form a genuine connection with who I am photographing an atmosphere is created.

Many. I love Ryan McGinely, Diane Arbus, Sally Mann, Tim Hetherington… lots.

I would LOVE to visit Japan as culturally it is so different and my experience of Japanese people and Japan has always been wonderful. The charm and modesty is so admirable.

 

I don’t follow many Japanese artists but I should!

Laura Pannack is a London based photographer. Renowned for her portraiture and social documentary work, she seeks to explore the complex relationship between subject and photographer.

 

Her work has been extensively exhibited and published worldwide, including at The National Portrait Gallery, The Houses of Parliament, Somerset House and the Royal Festival Hall in London.

 

Also, her artwork has received much acclaim and won numerous awards, among which are the John Kobal Award , Vic Odden prize, World Photo Press Awards, Juliet Margaret Cameron award and

 

the HSBC Prix de la Photographie prize.
