Artist Statement
Within this thoughtfully curated selection, I’ve embraced a restrained approach, aiming to convey a sense of mystery infused with complex emotions through minimalistic compositions. I craft a narrative that transcends the ordinary. Even when capturing still life, my intention is to infuse a touch of personification, making them feel alive.
The continued use of double exposure aims to create stream-of-consciousness moments and evoke flashbacks in our memory. While my exploration of the wonders of the natural world persists, I increasingly resonate with portraying humanity as an integral part of nature.
Imagination becomes a thread weaving through the world’s tapestry, revealing hidden connections. A keen observer will spot the subtle clues left by each element in this interconnected web of existence.

ORIGINAL INTERVIEW
– Your previous online exhibition in 2018 was very well received and we got so many inquiries about your photo books, not only from Japan but also from overseas as well. What do you think is the appeal of your works that attracts such a large audience?
– I’m truly delighted by the positive response to my previous online exhibition and the inquiries about my photo books. I haven’t delved into why my work resonates with such a broad audience. For me, it’s about channeling deep emotions and thoughts through photography, a medium that becomes a mirror reflecting my innermost perspectives.
I believe honesty and purity are the most precious qualities in any artist when they infuse them into their works—something the audience can easily find and touch. I sincerely appreciate everyone’s support and admiration for my work.
– “Intimacy” is one of the key themes in your works, and I assume that there was a long period of time when you were not able to be close to people due to the Covid Pandemic over the past few years. How did you perceive and overcome this difficult situation during this period?
– Although I am someone who often prefers solitude, the prolonged experience of the COVID-19 was unexpected for everyone. Regardless of what is happening on this Earth, it directly or indirectly influences all of us as a shared destiny.
I reminisce about the days gone by, yet it hasn’t led me to cease creating. Intimacy extends beyond human relationships; self or any ordinary thing around us can serve as a canvas for photography. We can imbue them with meaning and life through our creative process. This drive and purpose have significantly alleviated my negative emotions.
– Your works give us mysterious and unrealistic feels. The unique use of light may be one reason, but regarding the composition of images, do you also plan in advance to create this kind of atmosphere? Or they are just the results obtained through practices?
– Initially, I approached photography intuitively, discovering my preferences over time. A distinctive aesthetic of my own emerged.
While I may have some initial ideas, inspiration often comes unexpectedly, driven by a balance between my appreciation for light and exploring for the unknown. I avoid unnecessary complexity, even with double exposures, aiming to create reflective pieces that evoke tranquility and intrigue, fostering a sense of freedom for the viewer.
– What part of the creative process do you enjoy most, and what do you find most challenging?
– The most enjoyable aspect of my creative process is the state of flow—the moment when I immerse myself entirely in the endeavor to construct an image. The exploration of perception during this immersive process is the most fascinating; at that point, everything else seems inconsequential.
On the other hand, I don’t create every day. I’m the type who picks up the camera when everything feels just right, especially when working on personal projects. This approach allows me to maintain a high standard in my work, but it may contribute to a less prolific output. Working with unfamiliar or mismatched teams can also impact the results of my creative endeavors.
– What motivates you to continue creating your works?
– Being inherently introverted, I use my creations to convey my understanding of both the tangible and spiritual realms. It’s a way to capture scenes I observe or fleeting images that traverse my mind. Creating is my optimal avenue for personal expression, an ongoing process that expands my cognition and brings me closer to the envisioned outcome.
-Please let us know if there are any artists or artworks (photographs, paintings, films, music…etc) that currently interest you.
Currently, I find inspiration from Kiki Smith(American Artist)’s common emotions depicted in her art. Méret Oppenheim(Swiss Artist)’s creations captivate me with their peculiar and mysterious ambiance, showcasing her ability to breathe life into everyday objects.
In music, I’m drawn to Claire Rousay(American Musician) for her adept use of environmental sounds, creating a unique auditory experience. As for film, I’ve been following the director Jonathan Glazer(British film director) since ‘Under the Skin.’ His recent movie delve into deeper, more fascinating narratives.
-Please tell us if you have something you want to do in the future or any project you already have in mind.
In 2023, following a deliberate retreat from social media, I am contemplating how to enhance my inner balance in 2024. I have observed that despite the current emphasis on diverse voices, people frequently yield to various temptations, resulting in a sense of homogeneity. My intention is to make adjustments at my own pace, liberating myself from external pressures, with the anticipation of unveiling a new book and corresponding exhibitions. These creative endeavors are poised for their timely revelation.
