ヴィクトル・ベンスーシ氏（スペイン・カディス出身）は、海辺で育んだ感性をもとに、現在マドリードとバルセロナを拠点に写真家として活動しています。
余白や静けさを生かしたミニマルな構図と光のコントラスト、日常の中の小さな瞬間や気配を鋭く捉える独自のスタイルが特徴で、海や風景・人物など幅広いテーマを扱いながら、写真と映像・広告制作を横断する多面的な表現を展開しています。

Víctor Bensusi, a photographer from Cádiz, Spain, draws on the sensibilities he developed growing up by the sea and is currently based in Madrid and Barcelona.
His distinctive style captures fleeting moments and subtle presences in everyday life through minimal compositions and the interplay of light and shadow. Working across a wide range of subjects, including the sea, landscapes, and people, he explores a multifaceted approach that spans photography, film, and commercial projects.

オリジナルインタビュー / ORIGINAL INTERVIEW
-まず、写真を始めたきっかけを教えていただけますか？
写真への興味は、私の祖父が写真家で 故郷のカディスで写真店を経営していたことに始まります。夏の間 暗室にこもり、まるで魔法のように写真が紙に浮かび上がってくるのを眺めていたのを覚えています。
その瞬間は今でも鮮明に覚えていますが、写真にハマりそうだと気づいたのは、それから何年も経って 高校生になってからでした。好きだった女の子が放課後の写真教室に通い始めたので、私も少しでも一緒に過ごしたくて入会しました。結局、彼女とはうまくいきませんでしたが、写真への愛は変わりませんでした。
– Firstly, will you tell us how you started photography?
My curiosity for photography began because my grandfather was a photographer and owned a photo shop in Cádiz, my hometown. I remember spending summers in the darkroom, watching the images appear on the paper as if by magic.
That moment stayed with me forever, but it wasn’t until years later, in high school, that I realized I would dedicate myself to it. The girl I liked signed up for an after-school photography course, and I joined too just to spend a bit more time with her. In the end, things didn’t work out with that girl, but my love for photography did.
-今回このオンライン展覧会でご紹介くださっている作品について、少しお話を聞かせてください。
この度紹介させていただく作品は、私が何を撮りたいのか、そしてどのように撮りたいのかを完璧に表現した作品集です。一枚のレンズを通して様々な国を巡る旅、つまり、ノスタルジアに彩られ、人々と風景との関係性を中心に据えた、直感的で静かな撮影方法です。
-Please tell us a little about the works you are showcasing in this online exhibition.
This is a selection of work that perfectly defines what I like to shoot and how I like to do it. It’s a journey through different countries seen through a single lens — an intuitive and quiet way of shooting, marked by nostalgia and centered on the relationship between people and the landscape.
-海辺で撮影された作品が多いようですが、海はあなたにとって何か特別な思い入れがある場所なのでしょうか？
私はスペイン南部の小さな街カディスで生まれました。周囲は海に囲まれています。本土とは狭い地峡でしか繋がっておらず、海と湿地帯、果てしなく続く水平線、そして明るく強烈な光に囲まれて育ちました。また、人生の大半をサーフィンに費やしたため、ほとんどの時間をビーチで過ごしました。この経験を通して、私は周囲の人々のライフスタイルを捉え、シンプルでクリーンな構図を意識するようになりました。
-Many of your works seem to be shot at the seaside. Is the sea a place that you have a special attachment to?
I was born in Cádiz, a small city in the south of Spain, completely surrounded by the sea. It’s connected to the mainland only by a narrow isthmus, so I grew up between the ocean and the marshlands, infinite horizons, and bright, intense light. I also spent much of my life surfing, so most of my days were spent on the beach. This taught my eyes to compose in a clean and simple way, capturing the lifestyle of the people around me.
-あなたの作品に見られる落ち着いた穏やかな色彩からは、懐かしく感傷的な印象を受けます。このような色やトーンを表現するために何かあえて工夫していることがあるのでしょうか？
今はカディスから遠く離れて暮らしているので、海やそこに住む人々を撮影するときはいつも、今は感じられない美しさへの切ない思いと物憂げな思いを込めています。あの温かみのある色合いは、ノスタルジアと深く関係していると思います。故郷、人々、そして海が恋しいので、私の写真にはどうしてもどこか悲しみが漂っているように感じます。私は思慮深く、冷静な人間なので、撮影や編集の過程で、そうした感情が少しでも作品に表れるようにしたいと思っています。
-The subdued calm colors seen in your work gives us nostalgic sand sentimental impressions. Is there anything you do particularly to express these colors or tones?
Since I’m living far from Cádiz now, whenever I photograph the sea and its people, I do it with the melancholy and longing for a beauty I don’t have at the moment. I think those warm tones have a lot to do with nostalgia. I miss my land, my people, and my sea, so I feel there’s always a touch of sadness in my photos that I can’t avoid. I’m also a reflective, calm person, so I like to see a bit of that in my images when I shoot and edit them.
-制作過程において、最も楽しんでいらっしゃることは何ですか？また、最も難しいと感じることは何でしょうか？
一番好きなのは、間違いなく撮影です。先ほども言ったように、人、場所、光、色、そして瞬間を観察するのが大好きです。何か目に留まったら、すぐに近づき、ファインダーを覗き、素早くフレーミングして、1、2枚だけ撮影します。同じものを何枚も撮るのは好きではありません。自分の直感を信じ、アングルや構図を変えることに執着しません。
おそらく一番退屈なのはレタッチですが、幸いなことに、私が撮影する写真の性質上、それほど時間をかける必要はありません。私の本質の一部は色の扱い方にあると考えているため、カラーグレーディングには細心の注意を払っていますが、それ以外は、1枚の写真に時間をかけすぎないようにしています。
-What part of the creative process do you enjoy most, and what do you find most challenging?
My favorite part, without a doubt, is shooting. As I said, I love observing people, places, lights, colors, and moments. Once something catches my eye, I get closer, look through the viewfinder, frame quickly, and take just one or two shots. I don’t like making many photos of the same thing. I trust my instinct and don’t obsess over changing angles or compositions.
Perhaps the most boring part for me is retouching, but fortunately, thanks to the type of photography I do, I don’t need to spend much time on it. I am very meticulous with color grading because I believe part of my essence lies in the way I handle color, but beyond that, I try not to spend too much time on each photo.
-使用しているカメラ機材に何かこだわりはありますか？
私の撮影スタイル上、軽くてオートフォーカスが速く、手間がかからないカメラを持ち歩くのが好きです。人混みに溶け込み、目立ちすぎずに魔法のような瞬間を捉えるには、旅先でお気に入りのカメラはNikon F100です。普段は24mmと35mmの単焦点レンズと組み合わせて使っています。シンプルで信頼性が高く頑丈です。
-Do you have any particular preference regarding cameras (equipment) you use?
Because of the way I shoot, I like to carry light, fast cameras with autofocus—ones that don’t need much care. My favorite camera for traveling and capturing magical moments while blending into the crowd and not drawing too much attention is the Nikon F100, which I usually pair with a 24mm and a 35mm. Simple, reliable, and tough.
-作品制作に影響を受けたアーティストや写真家はいらっしゃいますか？
私はアレックス・ウェッブ（米写真家）の複雑で詩的な構成方法、ロバート・フランク（米写真家）によるドキュメンタリー写真の定義を変えた自然発生的で一見「未完成」なフレーム、ジャック・デイヴィソン（英写真家）の作品に見られるシュールレアリズムと影の使い方、そしてジム・ゴールドバーグ（米写真家・アーティスト）がイメージを取り扱う遊び心のある方法に、いつも非常に魅了されてきました。
-Is there any artist or photographer that has inspired your works?
I’ve always felt very drawn to Alex Webb’s complex and poetic way of composing, to the spontaneous and seemingly “unfinished” frames that redefined documentary photography through Robert Frank, to the surrealism and use of shadows in Jack Davison’s work and to the playful way Jim Goldberg works with his images.
-日本に興味はありますか？好きな日本人アーティストはいますか？
日本に興味がない人なんているでしょうか？ずっと行きたかったんです。2026年の春にようやく行けるので、お会いできたら嬉しいです！写真に関しては、川内倫子さんの写真集を何冊か持っていますし、杉本博司さんの海の撮り方には何年も夢中になっていました。
-Are you interested in Japan? Any Japanese Artist you know?
Who wouldn’t be interested in Japan? I’ve wanted to go for a long time, and I’ll finally be visiting in the spring of 2026, so I hope we can meet! Photographically speaking, I have a couple of Rinko Kawauchi’s books, and for years I was obsessed with the way Hiroshi Sugimoto photographs the sea.
-将来的に何かやりたいことや、今すでに考えていることがあれば教えてください。
現在、初の写真集を制作中です。チベットの遊牧民の家族と暮らし、彼らの文化に浸り、風景や動物たちとのかかわりを深く理解したチベット地方を旅した作品です。春に出版し、東京に来た際に皆さんにお見せしたいと思っています。
– Please tell us if you have something you want to do in the future or any project you already have in mind.
I’m currently working on my first photobook, where I explore a Tibetan region where I lived with nomadic families, immersing myself in their culture and admiring their relationship with the landscape and the animals. I hope to release it in the spring and bring it to you when I visit Tokyo!
ヴィクトル・ベンスーシはスペイン南部の先端、海と光に囲まれたカディスで生まれました。13歳の時に、借りたカメラと父からもらったオリンパス・ペンEE-3を使って写真を撮り始めました。記憶に残るある夏の日、祖父が使わせてくれた現像スペースで紙に焼き上がる写真を見た時、これは一生の仕事になると確信しました。現在はマドリードとバルセロナに滞在し、フリーランスの写真家として広告などの仕事をしています。
ナイキ、コカ・コーラ、ユニバーサルミュージック、アディダスといったクライアントと仕事をし、作品はコンデ・ナスト・トラベラーやYWYWマガジン、HUFマガジンなど、数多くのウェブサイトに掲載されています。また、東京、シドニー、バルセロナ、ポルトガル、カディスなど、世界各地で展覧会を開催しています。
Víctor Bensusi was born in Cádiz, the tip of southern Spain surrounded by sea and light. He started taking pictures at age of 13 with borrowed cameras and an Olympus Pen EE-3 who he stole from his father. He still remember that summer day when his grandfather let him use the photo lab and looking at pictures appearing on paper he knew that this would be a livelong commitment. He is currently living in Madrid and Barcelona working as a freelance photographer doing advertising campaigns.
He has worked with clients such as Nike, Coca-Cola, Universal Music, Adidas and so on, and his work has been featured in numerous online publications including Conde Nast Traveler, YWYW Magazine, HUF magazine, etc. His exhibition have been held internationally, in cities such as Tokyo, Sydney, Barcelona, Portugal, and Cadiz.
